Paul Howard Douglas (1892-1976), a native of Massachusetts, came to the University
of Chicago with degrees from Bowdoin and Columbia. In the 1920's and 30's he drafted
legislation on unemployment, utility regulation, old age pensions and more. He became a Chicago
alderman while living in Hyde Park. He entered the Marines as a private in 1942, rising to Lt.
Colonel. In 1948 he ran for the US Senate, serving until 1966. He joined the Club in 1939,
presenting three papers.
