Hansjuergen W. Kienast, 80, the son of a German naval officer, was a national champion swimmer in his native land. During World War II he was a medic stationed near Venice. In 1956 he accepted a position at Methodist Hospital of Central Illinois, Peoria. He had residencies in psychiatry at Barnes/Renard Hospital, 81. Louis, Missouri, and in neurology at Bellevue Hospital, New York City, before he established his practice in Chicago. During his career he was on the medical staffs of Illinois Masonic, 81. Joseph, Ravenswood, Grant, Chicago Lakeshore, Thorek and Highland Park Hospitals. He was president of the Chicago Neurological Society and was distinguished life fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He helped develop the diagnostic ultrasound, which aided researchers in studying the brain in living humans. He also wrote about culture and the arts for German-language publications in Chicago. A member of the Literary Club since 1978, he presented 8 papers.
