Harold D. Klatz,
aged 86, died October 27,2001, in Deerfield, Illinois. Mr. Klatz, who studied music at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison, was the principal violist with the NBC Radio Orchestra
(1948-60), the Lyric Opera Orchestra and the Grant Park Symphony. In the 1960s and early 1970s, Mr. Klatz
was a member of the Puerto Rico-based Casals Festival
Orchestra. He was an assistant professor at Northwestern University's School of
Music where he played with the Sheridan Quartet and later also taught at the
Music Center of the North Shore. He conducted the Hyde Park Chamber Orchestra
from 1975 to 1990. He was a fellow of the American Viola Society. On November
28, 2001 the Chicago City Council adopted a resolution praising Mr. Klatz as "an inspiring and magnetic individual."
A member of the Club since 1963, he presented two papers and was Leader at a
Book Night.
