Robert Collyer, our first president, grew up in poverty in industrial England in the early 19th century. He came to this country as a Methodist minister, but was expelled for his unorthodox views. He led several independent congretations in Chicago and New York. After he moved from Chicago he maintained ties to the Club for the balance of his life.
