Charles Lawrence Hutchinson, born 1854, joined his father's grain business, became a banker and was elected president of the Corn Exchange Bank in 1886, and was elected president of the Chicago Board of Trade at age 34. His civic interests were wide ranging, from the 1893 Columbian Exposition to the Art Institute to the University of Chicago. He was president of six, treasurer of over twenty, and director or trustee of forty. He was one of the founding members of The Cliff Dwellers and was a member of the Chicago Literary Club from 1884, president in 1907-08, and presented sixteen papers.
