David Swing (1830-1894) was called to the Westminster Presbyterian Church in
Chicago in 1866, uniting it with the North Presbyterian Church to form the Fourth Presbyterian
Church. He was accused of heresy while there, and the bitter trial and struggle led him to resign
his position. Within a week of his resignation, his popular appeal led to the formation of a new
church. He was a member of the Club from 1874 to his death in 1894. He was the first Chairman
of the Committee on Arrangements and Exercises, and was offered the presidency several times.
He presented twelve papers, of which "A True Love Story" was the Club's first published paper.
